Lets work on replacing the inherently small crape myrtle trees along the north face of Hamilton Street (W. Hyattsville's Main St) and install native seasonal canopy trees (ie. Acer rubrum / Red Maple) along the north and south sides (and median if needed) to enhance the streetscape appeal. Its a very low-cost task with a positive return.
I would like to see a traffic study conducted at the intersection of 410 (E-W Highway) and Queens Chapel. Cars that are driving west on 410 (E-W Highway) and that are turning right (north) onto Queens Chapel Road have a "no turn on red" sign, yet this sign is very seldom obeyed. When pedestrians are crossing 410 (I do this daily), cars are often continuing to make a right turn on red while pedestrians are in the crosswalk. I would like to propose that we conduct a traffic study to get this documented and evaluate options to make the intersection safer for pedestrians. One idea would be to Install a red arrow light to better communicate "no right turn" for traffic driving west on 410 and turning right onto Queens Chapel northbound. I also wonder if the "No turn on red" sign is placed visibly enough. When the sun is setting at the end of the day, visibility is compromised and the sign is harder to see. Thank you!
I would like to see a crosswalk or traffic light at Lancer Drive and Ager Road! People cross there to get to the West Hyattsville Metro Station and the cars hardly ever stop for people to cross the street.
Earlier this year, our Mayor and City Council sent Senators Cardin, Mikulski and the USPS a letter that read: "The City of Hyattsville requests your assistance reducing the geographical area that is considered 'Hyattsville' by the United States Postal Service. As you are aware, the Hyattsville postal code is far larger than our incorporated municipality. While this may seem innocuous, it causes great frustration among residents and non-residents and confusion among news media. Below are two examples of how the current situation is problematic. When crime occurs within the postal code, many media report it as occurring in Hyattsville, regardless of the many times we have corrected local outlets. The outcome is that our City's reputation and property values suffer, and our residents become exasperated. Additionally, when residents of the greater area seek government services- for example, snow plowing during and after the recent blizzard- they often write and call us with requests. When we explain that they do not live within our jurisdiction, the result is often further vexation with government bureaucracy failing to be clear and meet the public's needs. We are and will continue to be excellent partners with our neighboring cities and towns in Prince George's County. However, we need your help to remove what have become barriers to optimal governance for the constituents across our region and economic growth in the City of Hyattsville. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. It is greatly appreciated." We hereby join our voices to those of our Mayor and City Council and ask that you help us by working together to identify a solution to our concerns." The Arts District lacks a unified vibe. The are's brand as an artsy and local destination would benefit greatly from encouraging more art gallery businesses and art events on a weekly basis. The annual festival does not resonate for long, and there are no notices of art events that are accessible by bike or walking. We should encourage a more cohesive and unified area within the district for artists to showcase their work and promote it through events. Also consider programming art walks that showcase artists along an engaging and interactive walk for visitors and locals.
From high school students to baby carriages, our city is growing smarter and using its feet and bicycles more than ever. If we cannot reduce the posted speed limit on roadways like US-1 we should implement smart crosswalk to minimize accidents and fatalities. Like Arlington County, and many other municipalities, these devices can help our speed cameras reduce speeds while adding that extra protection for other important commuters using our public rights of way - people and bikes.
Hyattsville is a beautiful pedestrian and bike friendly city that neighbors many more bike and pedestrian friendly cities. We don't just welcome cars in our city, but bikes and pedestrians equally. The best way to underscore this is through highlight those paths through painted and separated bike lanes. Please see the attached photo of what Montgomery County and Washington, DC are doing today.
It would be great to have a more vibrant destination and local appeal with our very own beer garden. This would also help make our community more of a regional destination. It can be seasonal, like Garden District in DC.
To discourage blight on Route 1 and around Hyattsville, the city should impose property tax increases and penalties for prolonged vacancies, particularly in commercial properties, such as what Washington DC does.
Lets try to promote our City as a more unique And local experience for other regional residents to want to visit.
I propose the development or adoption of a lighting ordinance based on the Model Ordinance drafted by the Dark Sky Association and approved by the Illumination Engineers Society of North America which help guide the reduction of light pollution. Unshielded and improperly install lighting reduces our ability to see all but the brightest stars at night, it creates unsafe interactions between drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, decreases security through reduced visibility through correct lighting, and reduces the disruption of biorhythms impact of artificial light on humans and the environment. We can lead the area in properly installed and shielded lights and with other communities adopting these we will all see more of the night sky and be safer when out at night.

It would be great if the old WSSC building on Gallatin street could be renovated to be used as a multipurpose community center. We could model it based on the old Greenbelt Community Center. Classes in the arts, crafts, exercise, language, etc could be offered. Sports activities such as volleyball, table tennis badminton and more could be fun for all ages and abilities. Also, activities for seniors could be safely hosted there. It would certainly be a positive use of the property that has been vacant for many, many years.
Currently, the City is broken into unconnected parts, such as * the EYA/Franklins/Vigilante restaurant area * Magruder Park * Heurich Park * Two Metros * West Hyattsville/East Hyattsville/North Hyattsville (and, within those, various sub-neighborhoods) * Mall ++ (UTC, etc.)
These all feel very DISconnected from each other. We need a way to visually and physically (and thus, emotionally and communitarianly - hey, language is fluid!) connect/bring these parts together. This is an urban design question and I'm sure there are experts out there who specialize in this; so no need to reinvent the wheel. Let's talk to them!
Improve the area around the West Hyattsville Metro to make it attractive to new businesses such as new coffee shops and restaurants, especially the area around the corner of Hamilton St. and Queens Chapel. That would make the area feel safer, encourage young families to move there, improve the walkability score for those neighborhoods, and help real estate values.
