We have waited for our representatives to raise the matter of "trash collection taxes being included in property taxes without service," but have had no real action.

Residents of multifamily condominium buildings are charged for trash and recycling services but receive no service from the City or County. This is done by classifying us as businesses, even though each residence in our building represents a single family home with family owners and payment responsibilities- just like any other single family home.

This situation represents a true financial hardship and injustice for the 143 Oglethorpe households (and other multifamily homes) who pay trash collection taxes to the city and recycling collection taxes to the county, in addition to an annual amount of approximately $18,000, for private trash and recycling pickup. About 2/3 of this cost is for the trash removal portion. This does not include individual costs for bulk trash pickup which every other Hyattsville household enjoys. This triple billing must stop.

We look forward to moving this issue forward and are open to discussing options (including tax refunds, trash pickup, etc.) with the public as the City has ignored us. Either the City should stop taxing the residents or should pick up the trash. This is basic fairness.

Hyattsville Residents, in this day and age when we are spending money on "extras" like putting art covers on utility boxes, isn't it only fair that we go back to the basics and discusss providing sanitation services for all residents? Neighbors who pay taxes and participate in our community? Neighbors who are paying for services they are not receiving? Please help us.

Yes! Agree completely. Our condo association on Farragut has been trying since 2013 to get this inequity corrected. Great idea to use this forum to publicize and bring other Hyattsville condo owners together on this issue.

Sunni,

Any update from council member Bart Lawrence on this unfair taxation issue? I'm reminded of it for two reasons today: 1) the thought of having to finish paying my $6k+ property tax bill before year end and 2) just read about city's upcoming bulk trash day on October 26 which, as a condominium owner, I will likely not be able to take advantage of...

Yes, just confirmed with city that condominium owners cannot take advantage of city's upcoming bulk trash pickup day on October 26.

It is time for us to receive the services the community of tax payers deserves.

We need to be at the City Council meeting on 10/15 at 8PM. A representative from each condo association should be prepared to speak on the impacts of this disparity on their residents.

I'll be there, resident of Park Park Condos. We shouldn't be subsidizing the rest of Hyattsville's trash collection.

Has anyone contacted Prince George's county lately to find out what they plan to do remedy their part of this "taxation without services" situation? I spoke to someone (Mr. Henry) there a couple of years ago. He acknowledged the issue and said the county was trying to figure out a solution... We need to follow up the county as well.

We haven't spoken to the county yet, but you're right.

So Monday Oct 15 at 8 pm is a regular council meeting and on Wednesday Oct 17 at 6:30 pm is a Ward One meeting with Bart Lawrence and Kevin Ward.

Question 1: Is this "tax trash" topic on the agenda for the Monday council meeting?

Question 2: Does anyone have a listing of all the condominium communities in Hyattsville?

Thanks, Jacqueline

1: The agenda isn't posted. Shouldn't matter anyway. 2: No, and that data will be hard to find. You can't search by business tax status on MD SOS website, so you would have to pay a 3rd party or ask the city (if that is on option) to request that information. It will require some digging.

Hi all, Thanks for the feedback on this idea. Staff has passed all comments along to the Mayor and Council for their consideration. This item is not on the agenda for the October 15 Council Meeting, however all are welcome to attend and make public comment. Should the item be scheduled for a future Council agenda, we'll post a note here so all are aware.
